October is Healthy Lung Month. With the increase in respiratory illness and poor air quality due to events such as the Canadian Wildfires, it is the perfect time to bring awareness to lung health. We have compiled a list of things you can do to keep your lungs healthy all year long.
1. Add More Plants to Your Living Space
Plants help to liven up any space, but they are more than just aesthetically pleasing. A great benefit to adding plants to your living space is that they help to purify the air. Plants convert the carbon dioxide that we exhale into fresh oxygen and remove toxins from the air. According to Good Housekeeping, the best air purifying houseplants include Aloe Vera, ferns, and English Ivy to name a few.
2. Clean Your Home
Just as the outdoor air quality can be concerning, so too can the indoor air quality. To improve air quality indoors, be sure to dust surfaces, vacuum rugs to be remove any trapped dust, and clean curtains and blankets. It may be costly, however, it is also a good idea to invest in quality air purifier and opt for natural household cleaning products.
3. Quit Smoking
According to the CDC, cigarette smoking is the number one risk for lung cancer and is linked to 80-90% of lung cancer deaths. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to help your lungs and overall health.
4. Exercise Regularly
Exercise strengthens both your muscles and your lungs. It is recommended that adults exercise for 30 minutes daily, five days a week. Whether it’s walking, biking, or some form of physical activity, your lungs will thank you.
5. Prevent Infection
Prevent the spread of infection by washing your hands often with soap and water and social distance as needed. Always be sure to consult with your doctor regarding any health concerns.
