The month of May is annually recognized as Women’s Health Month. It serves as a reminder for women all over to make their health a priority, as well as equipping them with the resources to improve their health.

Here are several ways women can take charge of their health:

  1. Schedule a Mammogram

According to the American Cancer Society, women between the ages of 45-54, with average risk of breast cancer, should get a mammogram each year. All women, regardless of age, should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes to their physicians.

  1. Get screened for colon cancer

While colon cancer is more common in men, women can still develop the disease. Women who have an average risk of developing colon cancer should begin screening at 45 years old.

  1. Check in on your mental health

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, women experience mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders at higher rates than men. If you are struggling with mental health, contacting your primary care physician is a good start. Your doctor can then refer you to a qualified mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist.

  1. Cervical Cancer Screenings

Each year, nearly 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,000 unfortunately die from the disease. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Women should begin screening for cervical cancer at age 21 by getting a pap smear.
