According to the Centers for Disease Control, Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death for American men, women, and individuals of most racial and ethnic groups in the US. Seniors age 65 and older are at greater risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke, or developing coronary heart disease. In most cases, heart disease can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle changes.

Here are a few tips for keeping your heart healthy:

1.      Follow a heart-healthy diet

A diet that is low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, colorful fruits and vegetables are great for the heart.

2.      Exercise

Regular physical activity can reduce heart disease risk factors such as cholesterol and high-blood pressure. Exercise does not have to be anything strenuous, rather something that gets you up and moving ex: walking or gardening.

3.      Maintain a Healthy Weight

The more body weight you have, the more likely you are to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and a host of other illnesses. Losing weight can help lower many of these levels.

4.      Minimize Stress

Higher stress levels can trigger a heart attack or angina. If you are feeling stressed, talk to your physician or therapist about your concerns.

5.      Quit Smoking

Smoking can increase your risk of heart disease and heart attack and worsen existing heart conditions, however, it’s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking, even later in life can reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer over time. If you are struggling to quit, talk to your physician about resources.
