Veterans Day is celebrated each year on November 11th. It is a time to honor the brave sacrifices of active and former United States military service men and women who have fought fearlessly to protect our freedoms. Celebrations both small and large will take place nationwide from New York City, which hosts the oldest and largest Veterans Day parade in the U.S., to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, which hosts an annual ceremony that is free and open to the public. According to the US Census Bureau, there were 16.5 million veterans living in the United States as of 2021.
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, recognized the armistice (or agreement) signed on the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month, marking the end of the hostilities of World War I. While they share similarities, Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day (observed on the last Monday in May), which is when we commemorate the service men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Other notable holidays in which we celebrate veterans include:
· Medal of Honor Day (March 25th)
· Vietnam Veterans Day (March 29th)
· Former POW Recognition Day (April 9th)
· Armed Forces Day on (May 20th)
· Women Veterans Day (June 12th)
· Korean War Veterans Armistice Day (July 27th)
· Purple Heart Day (August 7th)
· Pearl Harbor Remembrance (December 7th)
Quality of Life Home Care & Hospice would like to extend a big thank you to all of our veterans who have fought to preserve the freedoms that we are able to experience today. Happy Veterans Day! Leave a comment and tell us how you plan to honor the veterans in your life.
