According to the World Health Organization, self-care is defined as, ‘What people do for themselves to establish and maintain health, and to prevent and deal with illness. It is a broad concept encompassing hygiene, nutrition, lifestyle, environmental factors, socio-economic factors, and self-medication.’
While the majority of us have recently grasped onto this term within the last few years, it may seem like a completely foreign topic to the elderly. For example, many of our elderly have spent their whole lives working, raising children and grandchildren, and taking care of others, all without caring for themselves. It is never too late, though to begin practicing self care.
Self-care may vary from person to person. For some, it may be taking to the time to pamper themselves through spa treatments, nail appointments, and various beautifying practices. For others, it may be taking walk, curling up with a book, listening to relaxing music, or spending down time doing something of enjoyment. There is no wrong way to practice self-care. It should also be noted that emotional and mental health is also a part of self-care.
Here are some things to remember about self care:
1. Self care is not selfish. In order to care for anyone, you have to care for yourself first. We have all probably heard of the saying, ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup.’
2. Life can get hectic. Always make room to do something for yourself.
3. Health is Wealth. Prioritize your physical and mental health.
4. Make it fun! Life is about more than work. Try doing something that you always wanted to do.
5. Be intentional. Do your best to make it a routine, whether daily, weekly, or monthly.
